Texas’ Independence Creek Preserve Designated as National Natural Landmark

NPS director promotes the importance of collaboration between public and private lands for conservation.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland designated Independence Creek Preserve in west Texas as the newest National Natural Landmark, highlighting its significance to America’s natural heritage. This 20,000-acre Chihuahuan Desert preserve, managed by The Nature Conservancy, promotes conservation efforts through partnerships with private landowners.

“The preservation and protection of America’s special places is most successful when accomplished through inclusive, locally led efforts,” said Chuck Sams, Director of the National Park Service, which manages the national natural and historic landmarks programs. “This newly designated landmark exemplifies collaborative conservation while recognizing the ecological brilliance of this desert oasis.”

The designation of Independence Creek Preserve brings the total number of National Natural Landmarks to 605, spanning parks, wildlife refuges, and privately owned lands across the U.S. and its territories. The National Park Service has highlighted these sites for their exceptional natural qualities and their role in science and education.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Sams to receive God’s wisdom as he oversees the National Park Service.
  • For officials in the Department of the Interior to be prudent as they steward the nation’s public lands.
